Police have arrested a 26-year-old man accused of leading a gang that impersonated energy company employees to gain entry into homes and steal valuables.

Their latest victim, an 81-year-old woman in Thessaloniki, was tricked into allowing entry, resulting in the theft of €480 in cash, €15,000 in jewelry, and 100 British gold sovereigns worth €60,000.

Authorities uncovered that from August to December 2024, the group – comprising at least six members – committed nine thefts, stealing €212,500 in jewelry, €147,000 in gold coins, and €87,680 in cash.

The suspect, detained during a sting operation, faces prosecution. Investigations are ongoing to identify accomplices and trace stolen assets.
