Eager to spread joy and foster community spirit as the New Year approaches, bakers from the Peristeri district of western Athens, supported by students from the public baking and confectionary school in Galatsi, northern Athens, came together to create a giant New Year’s cake, or Vasilopita, weighing an impressive ten tons, at Peristeri Square on Monday.
The giant-sized cake, containing hundreds of hidden coins – normal-sized Vasilopita ordinarily contains one hidden coin, giving good luck to the receiver – was cut up into over 70,000 pieces and distributed to people at the square, state broadcaster ERT reported.
Ingredients required to prepare the gigantic Vasilopita included 9.5 tons of flour, 1,900 liters of olive oil, 5,700 eggs, 600 kilograms of sugar and 600 kilograms of icing sugar.
