A pregnant American woman has lost her child and is reported to be in critical condition and intubated in the ICU of Crete’s Hania Hospital after falling down a ravine while hiking in the Rethymno region, sustaining serious injuries. She was vacationing in Greece.

The loss of the woman’s child was confirmed by the hospital’s director, Giorgos Beas. “The woman was pregnant, and as a result of her injuries, she has lost the child she was carrying,” the doctor stated. “All necessary tests, including a CT scan, have been completed, and she is currently fighting for her life in critical condition,” he added.

The woman, who was hiking along the Preveli trail in the Rethymno region, was rescued after a four-hour operation by rescue crews. She reportedly sustained serious chest and head injuries.

The woman was initially taken to the Rethymno hospital but transferred to the Hania ICU once the severity of her injuries was determined.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fall. [AMNA, Kathimerini]
