Last year registered an increase in profitability but a slight contraction in turnover of 1.3% to 140.1 billion euros for the 500 most profitable companies in Greece, a year in which the energy crisis and geopolitical turmoil continued to pose a major challenge for businesses.

According to data from “ICAP CRIF: Business Leaders in Greece,” which analyzed the balance sheets of the 500 most profitable companies, an increase in EBITDA of 13.1% in 2023 to €24.4 billion from €21.6 billion in 2022 was observed, with the banking and the services domains recording a particularly large increase in earnings before taxes, interest and depreciation.

Regarding the trade sector, the largest increase in EBITDA was recorded by the supermarket sector (by €164.2 million), which also shows the highest profits in absolute terms in 2023 (€777.5 million). However, out of a total of 18 areas of the trade sector, 16 recorded an increase in EBITDA.

The industrial sector, however, showed a decrease in EBITDA by €349.9 million in 2023 compared to 2022. A small rise of 4.7% was also recorded in pretax profits, which amounted to €17.5 billion in 2023 from €16.7 billion the previous year.
