Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed internet addiction, banking reforms, tax relief plans and Greece’s foreign policy, in a wide-ranging interview with state broadcaster ERT on Tuesday.
Mitsotakis announced that a detailed plan to combat internet addiction will be presented on December 30, proposing a “digital adulthood” age of 15. He emphasized the need for structured policies to protect youth from online harm.
The prime minister revealed bold measures to eliminate payment fees in banking and significantly reduce money transfer costs for amounts up to €5,000. He criticized PASOK’s proposals in this area as lacking clarity but remained open to adopting sound suggestions from the opposition.
He hinted at tax relief measures for the middle class in 2025, contingent on continued economic growth and successful anti-tax evasion strategies. Highlighting the government’s economic record, he stressed that tax cuts would be funded responsibly, without straining the budget.
Mitsotakis highlighted Greece’s strategic role in Middle Eastern diplomacy and the protection of religious minorities in conflict zones like Syria. He also praised the unprecedented strength of US-Greece relations and expressed optimism for continued collaboration under the new US administration.
“The Greek-American relations are at their best point ever. I believe this will continue under the Trump presidency,” he said. Speaking about the nominee for the next American ambassador, Kimberly Guilfoyle, he noted, “She is someone close to Trump’s circle, and that is a good thing,” adding that whoever was appointed “would serve the strong level of relations between the two countries.”
The prime minister confirmed plans to begin discussions on constitutional reform in late 2025, aiming for broad political consensus. Regarding the presidency, he stated that the candidate would be announced in January 2025, respecting institutional protocols.
“I will announce my decisions at the appropriate time,” he said.
