A train reportedly carrying 70 people collided with a truck in Kilkis, northern Greece, Friday afternoon, killing the truck’s driver, rescue crews have confirmed.
All passengers and staff on board the train were reported to be safe by Hellenic Train, the Italian state-owned operator of Greece’s railway.
Hellenic Train, in its announcement, noted that the train collided with a truck that had breached a guarded level crossing.
Passengers aboard the train, which was on a route from Thessaloniki to Serres, reported that the barriers were down and the vehicle was on the railway tracks.
The collision occurred in the Kallindia area, close to Lake Doirani, along the border of Greece and North Macedonia.
The train’s passengers were transferred to buses to continue their journey, authorities announced.
