With the support of Archbishop Makarios of Australia, Bishop Kyriakos of Melbourne, Oakleigh Grammar’s Year 5 and 6 students, the Philoptochos Society of Melbourne, and Backpack for Kids, a fundraiser was organized to benefit homeless children across Victoria, as reported by The Greek Herald.

The initiative kicked off when the Philoptochos Society donated 40 empty backpacks. Oakleigh Grammar students then rallied together to collect essential items – ranging from clothing and stationery to books, drink bottles, and lunch boxes – which they carefully packed into the backpacks for donation to Backpack for Kids. This organization provides vital support to children in foster care and temporary housing.

According to Backpack for Kids, nearly 16,500 children in Victoria are currently living in state care. This alarming reality deeply moved the students, inspiring them to take action.

Representatives from Five Loaves attended the event and commended the Philoptochos Society and the students for their efforts. They praised the remarkable energy and generosity shown by the young participants, whose actions made a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

“Through their involvement, the students not only provided essential supplies but also gained valuable insights into empathy, gratitude, and social responsibility, underscoring the transformative power of community and small acts of kindness,” the report said.
