Greece’s “Oikothen” home care program is revolutionizing cancer treatment, offering patients comfort and dignity. Launched in June 2023 by the Agios Savvas Hospital in Athens, the initiative delivers at-home therapies to patients who previously endured exhausting hospital visits.
Since its start, 156 patients have benefited, including one who described it as life-changing after years of battling cancer. “Every 22 days, I receive care at home, avoiding long waits and hospital fatigue,” she said. Similar sentiments were echoed by another, who called the visiting care teams “angels.” The program has expanded to four other hospitals, with plans to reach all major cities by 2025, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said. It also alleviates pressure on hospital resources, improving conditions for in-hospital care.
Medical experts praised the program’s dual impact: enhancing patient well-being and reducing strain on hospitals.
