Driver from car chase with police dies of crash injuries

A 30-year-old man who was involved in a high-speed car chase with the police on Athens’ Kifissos Highway in the early hours of Thursday has died of injuries sustained when his vehicle crashed.

The chase started shortly after midnight when the 30-year-old motorist refused to stop for police who were carrying out a patrol in the area of Zefyri, northwest of Athens, and flagged him down for an inspection.

He sped off instead, driving onto the wrong lane of the highway, where after several kilometers he crashed into a truck, sustaining extensive injuries.

He was rushed to the KAT Hospital in Maroussi, northern Athens, under police guard, but doctors were unable to save his life.

The 30-year-old has been identified only as being a member of the Roma community, which has several makeshift settlements in the Zefyri area.

The truck’s driver was not injured in the collision, according to reports.
