The Municipality of Athens has introduced the SafeAthens app to boost residents’ security. Developed by the Athens Municipal Development Agency (DAEM), the app allows users to report emergencies, natural disasters, and other risks in real time.

SafeAthens offers several key features: Users can alert their contacts via SMS or push notifications, sharing their location and movement through live tracking. In case of an emergency such as an attack, the app sends the user’s location and personal details to the police.

The app also allows users to confirm their safety to chosen contacts and seek assistance with a simple shake of the device, sharing live location data.

Additional functions include activating an alarm to draw attention in critical situations. If the alarm remains active for 30 seconds, the app sends an automatic notification to selected contacts.

SafeAthens is also the first app in Greece designed specifically for the hearing-impaired, offering an accessible safety tool for all citizens.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas highlighted that the app provides “a comprehensive digital shield” to ensure the safety of residents, regardless of their needs.
