The lawyer for a 26-year-old man detained over an October explosion in Athens’ Ambelokipoi district has criticized the decision to remand his client, citing insufficient evidence.
“The detention was based solely on a partial fingerprint found on a common item, a bag,” attorney Alexandros Kanellopoulos said Saturday. He added that his client “categorically denies the charges” and argued that pretrial detention should be a last resort, based on clear evidence and the defendant’s character, not the seriousness of the allegations.
The explosion occurred in an apartment believed to be used for assembling explosives. It killed one man, thought to have been handling the materials and severely injured a woman. Authorities allege the 26-year-old’s fingerprint was found inside a bag containing a gun and magazine. Four others, including the injured woman, face terrorism-related charges.
The case has drawn public attention, with supporters of the detainee clashing with police outside the Athens courthouse during his testimony.
