The festive season officially began in the heart of Athens on Thursday evening with the lighting of the Christmas tree in Syntagma Square.
The celebration, organized by the Municipality of Athens, included a performance by singer Nefeli Fasouli accompanied by the Athens Big Band. The event was hosted by state broadcaster ERT duo Nancy Zabetoglou and Thanasis Anagnostopoulos.
Standing 19.5 meters tall, the Christmas tree, sourced from the village of Taxiarchis in the heart of Mount Holomontas, Halkidiki, took center stage in the capital’s main square. Athens Mayor Haris Doukas officiated the tree-lighting ceremony, inviting both residents and visitors to join in the festivities. “Let’s all celebrate together the Christmas magic that will spread through every neighborhood of Athens,” he said. The tree dazzles with gold and red ornaments.
Adding to the festive charm this year, Syntagma Square features stars, elves, and beloved characters like the Nutcracker. Similar holiday decorations will adorn squares throughout Athens, while landmarks across the city will be illuminated for the first time ever.
