Turnover in all businesses of the retail sector in Greece posted a small annual increase of 0.8% in the third quarter of 2024, significantly below the inflation rate, while apparel retailers saw an annual decline, according to the figures the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) released on Friday.
Retail trade turnover amounted to 18.84 billion euros in July-September 2024, compared to €18.68 billion last year, while compared to the second quarter of 2024, which had amounted to €18.11 billion, it recorded an increase of 4%.
According to ELSTAT data, businesses in the retail sector, excluding the vehicle, food and fuel sectors, saw turnover in the third quarter of 2024 amount to €6.82 billion, recording an increase of 1.2% compared to the third quarter of 2023, when it had amounted to €6.73 billion, and an increase of 3.8% from the second quarter of 2024 with €6.57 billion.
It is reminded that the inflation rate in Greece averaged at 3.1% in the third quarter on an annual basis, according to the estimates by the European Commission published a few days ago.
Across the retail sector the activities that showed the largest increase in turnover in the third quarter of 2024 year on year were the sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles and their parts and accessories (up 18.8%), and the retail trade of music and video recordings in specialized stores (up 15.7%).
The activities that showed the biggest annual decrease in turnover in July-September were the retail trade of footwear and leather goods in specialized stores (down 8.9%) and the retail trade of electrical household appliances in specialized stores (down 8.6%).
