Kasselakis to announce new party name on Saturday

Stefanos Kasselakis has announced that the founding declaration and name of his new political party will be announced at noon on Saturday.

In a video posted on social media, the ousted former SYRIZA leader invited supporters to register online on the todikomaskinima.gr site as members of the organization and to have a say in picking the new party name.

The vote on the name will close on Friday, a day before the launch at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation.

Members of the new movement are being asked to select three names, in order of preference, from the following 15 options: Leap of Democracy, Tomorrow, Democratic Party, Power of Democracy, Greek Dream, Ourselves, Movement, Democracy Movement, We Can, Forward, Horizon, Progressive Movement, Progressive Citizens, Progress and Modern Left.

If a proposed names receives more than 50% of the votes, it will be accepted. Otherwise, the name with the lowest share of first preferences will be eliminated, and its second preferences distributed to the other proposals. The process will continue until one name secures a majority.

Meanwhile, SYRIZA leadership hopefuls have been speaking to the media before a televised debate.

Sokratis Famellos said he expected the debate to be constructive and democratic.

Nikolas Faradouris said the debate was “the essence of democracy, as long as it is done in a decent framework of political culture.”

Calling for a strong turnout in Sunday’s vote, Apostolos Gletsos said SYRIZA needed to show it was “back on the ramparts to fight for society and for every single Greek.”

Pavlos Polakis said he hoped the debate and election would bring an end to a “traumatic period” for the party.

The debate, which began at 8 p.m., is being broadcast live on ERTNews.
