Greece is set to implement stricter regulations for light personal electric vehicles (LPEVs) as part of a new traffic code being pushed by Deputy Transport Minister Vassilis Oikonomou.
With scooter use rising in cities, the regulations aim to ensure safer integration of micro-mobility vehicles, such as scooters, alongside pedestrians and cyclists. New fines target high-speed violations, mobile phone use while driving, and improper parking. Riding over 35 km/h – exceeding the 25 km/h limit – will incur a €150 fine for riders and €350 for those allowing scooters to operate at unsafe speeds.
The new traffic code will categorize violations based on their severity, with penalties ranging from €30 for low-risk offenses to €350 for more dangerous infractions, like using mobile phones or headphones while riding.
Parking violations, including blocking disability access ramps, will result in fines up to €150. Officials hope the new measures will reduce scooter-related accidents and integrate them more effectively into urban transportation networks.
