CYA to host lecture on farming and militarism in ancient Greece

College Year in Athens will host a lecture on the clash between agrarian life and military demands in ancient Greece on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

K. Scarlett Kingsley, Associate Professor of Classics at Agnes Scott College in the US, will deliver the talk, titled “The perils of agrarianism: The breakdown of the hoplite-farmer in the fifth century BCE,” at the CYA Academic Center (5 Plateia Stadiou, cyathens.org).

Kingsley will draw on Herodotus’ “Histories” to examine Persia’s militaristic ethos and its influence on Athenian imperialism, offering a nuanced perspective on the intersections of land, wealth, and empire. Registration is required.
