Emergency alert 112 issued for four regions as storm ‘Alexander’ approaches


An emergency alert via 112 has been issued for Thessaly, Evia, Fthiotida, and the Sporades, warning of hazardous weather conditions.

“Warning of dangerous weather phenomena in your area from tonight, November 15, to midday tomorrow, November 16. Avoid unnecessary travel and follow authorities’ instructions,” read the message.

Storm “Alexander” is bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms, accompanied by hail, frequent lightning, strong winds, and a noticeable temperature drop in northern Greece. The phenomena are expected to last for 30 hours, from Friday evening (15/11/2024) to Saturday night (16/11/2024).

According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), the heaviest rainfall is expected in Thessaly, the Sporades, central and northern Evia, as well as the northeastern parts of eastern Central Greece. However, intense thunderstorms are also anticipated in other parts of the country.

Friday, November 15, 2024:

  • Morning: Heavy rain and thunderstorms in the Ionian Sea, subsiding by late evening.
  • Afternoon: Storms in Epirus, western Central Greece, and western and northern Peloponnese, easing by late evening.
  • Evening (after 6pm): Severe weather in Western Macedonia, Thessaly, the Sporades, Evia, and eastern Central Greece.

Saturday, November 16, 2024:

  • Until late afternoon (6pm): Severe conditions in Thessaly, the Sporades, and eastern Central Greece.

The most intense effects are expected in eastern Thessaly (Larissa and Magnesia), the Sporades, central and northern Evia, and parts of northeastern Central Greece (Fthiotisda and Boeotia).

  • From early morning (2am to 8pm): Storms in the eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese.
  • Until early morning (5am): Rain in the Cyclades.
  • Evening to midnight (6pm to 12am): Storms in western Crete.
  • Northeastern Aegean: Strong northeasterly winds of 8 to 9 Beaufort from Friday evening to Saturday night.
  • Central Aegean: Strong northeasterly winds up to 8 Beaufort from Saturday afternoon.

Authorities urge residents to remain cautious and minimize travel in affected areas.
