Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said that the displacement of Palestinians could lead to regional instability during his speech at the UN Security Council meeting on the Middle East on Tuesday.
“Palestinians must take a leading role in this process, as displacement could lead to regional instability,” he said, referring to reconstruction efforts and post war planning.
The foreign minister highlighted the recent ceasefire and hostage releases in Gaza as proof that political will can yield meaningful results.
He also praised Egypt, Qatar, and the United States for their mediation efforts and stressed the importance of fully implementing all phases of the agreement to ensure the “release of all hostages and the permanent cessation of hostilities.”
However, he acknowledged the dire humanitarian situation and urged the Security Council to prioritize the continuous flow of aid, adding that Greece is providing humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza.
“We continue to send humanitarian aid to assist Palestinian families. Through the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Monastery of St. Porphyrius in Gaza has become a refuge for many—both Christians and Muslims,” he said.
