Europe Scrambles As Trump Sides With Russia

European leaders scrambled to respond to a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape as they met in Paris for a second emergency summit in just three days.

President Donald Trump’s embrace of Vladimir Putin’s narrative, blaming Ukraine for the ongoing war, deepened anxieties among traditional US allies. This followed earlier pronouncements by Trump and his administration suggesting a US withdrawal from its European security role and US-Russia peace talks that would exclude both Europe and Ukraine.

French President Emmanuel Macron convened the meetings in an attempt to forge a unified European response to the perceived abandonment by the United States. Trump’s actions, including siding with Russia on the cause of the war, have fueled fears of a historic realignment of alliances, leaving many in Europe stunned and apprehensive. Former French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian voiced these concerns, stating Trump’s actions jeopardized European security and represented a dangerous reversal of the post-World War II global order.

The perceived parallels between Trump’s actions and the appeasement of Hitler and Stalin in the past have heightened anxieties, particularly in Eastern and Central Europe.

Adding to the tension, Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in Riyadh to discuss a peace plan for Ukraine. The exclusion of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from these discussions further inflamed the situation. Rubio outlined a three-part plan encompassing the restoration of US-Russia relations, exploring new partnerships between the two countries, and addressing the parameters for ending the war in Ukraine.
