A 20-year-old man from Germany was declared missing on Saturday after appearing to have headed into Crete’s Samaria Gorge, which he had driven to in a rented car.
Police were notified of his disappearance by the car rental company on Saturday, after he failed to report back. The man had rented the car on Thursday.
Authorities located the rented car at the entrance to the gorge but have found no trace of the man so far. The gorge is closed to visitors during the winter months.
Locals from seaside Agia Roumeli, a village near the opposite end of the gorge in Crete’s Hania region, reported seeing a man who matched the description of the missing individual in recent days.
However, authorities, continuing their search, remain unsure whether this is a case of mistaken identity. The possibility that the missing man may have taken a boat from Agia Roumeli is also being considered.
