The body of 3-year-old Angelos arrived in Athens early Wednesday morning for his funeral, marking the final chapter in a heartbreaking story that has shocked Greece.
The young child, who suffered horrific abuse while living with his mother and her partner in Heraklion, Crete, succumbed to his severe injuries but left behind a legacy of hope—his organs will now offer the gift of life to two recipients.
The ferry carrying Angelos’ body docked at the port of Piraeus shortly after 6:30 a.m., where his grieving family prepared to lay him to rest in the coming days.
“An Angel on Earth, Now an Angel in Heaven”
Dr. Vassilis Vougas, director of the Transplant Surgery Clinic, struggled to hold back his emotions as he described the deeply moving moment when he and his team prepared to retrieve the child’s organs for donation.
“He was an angel on earth, and now he is an angel in heaven,” Vougas told Greek media, recalling how doctors and medical staff observed a minute of silence next to the operating table to honor Angelos.
“It was the first time I witnessed such a tribute in a Greek hospital,” Vougas said. “When a brain-dead donor is brought into the operating room for organ retrieval, all doctors bow their heads. This is a moment of great respect. That is what we did in Heraklion.”
A Heartbreaking but Life-Saving Decision
The transplant team faced an emotionally overwhelming challenge in proceeding with the surgery. Vougas recounted his initial reaction upon seeing Angelos’ small body on the operating table.
“Oh my God, what are we going to do now?” he recalled thinking. “How do you remove vital grafts from such a tiny body?”
Despite the overwhelming sadness, Vougas emphasised the importance of focusing on duty and experience, knowing that Angelos’ organs would save the lives of others.
“The emotions are overwhelming. As a doctor and as a father, you feel the weight of the moment. But you also know that this child, this little hero, will give life to others. It is a shocking moment, yet also one of great purpose.”
