Almost one in five Greeks is unable to keep their home warm enough, the EUโ€™s statistical arm Eurostat has said.

The highest shares of people unable to keep their homes adequately warm in 2023 were observed in Spain and Portugal (both 20.8%), followed by Bulgaria (20.7%), Lithuania (20.0%) and Greece (19.2%).

The latest figure represents a significant increase from the 17.1% of Greeks who said they could not keep their homes warm in 2020. In 2022, the Greek figure stood at 18.7%.

In recent years, the percentage of people unable to keep their homes warm has been increasing across Europe. For example, the EU average was 7.5% in 2020, 6.9% in 2021 and 9.3% in 2022 before reaching 10.6% in 2023.

By contrast, Luxembourg (2.1%), Finland (2.6%), Slovenia (3.6%), Austria (3.9%) and Estonia (4.1%) reported the lowest shares.
