The debate has officially opened over stricter rules for electric scooters used mainly by minors, following accidents and the recent death of a 13-year-old in Ilia.
Speaking to Mega TV, Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis backed abolishing scooters due to their danger, especially for minors riding on high-speed roads. He said new regulations would ban minors from using scooters on roads, allowing them only in pedestrian areas and squares. “My personal position is that these should not exist. It is very dangerous,” he said, adding that broader measures are needed “to restrict or ban them,” warning that without dedicated lanes “we will lose lives.”
Transport engineering professor Ioannis Politis disagreed, saying bans have poor results. He argued responsibility should shift to parents through digital controls that lock devices and monitor behavior. He also proposed state-mandated apps with geolocation, speed limiters, and restrictions preventing minors from entering high-speed roads.
