Police on Tuesday arrested a man for driving an electric scooter at 72 kilometers per hour on Syngrou Avenue, nearly three times the legal speed limit.

Regulations cap the maximum speed for electric scooters at 25 kph. The rider, a 23-year-old Egyptian national, was due to appear before a prosecutor.

Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis said Tuesday the government plans to introduce new rules governing electric scooter use, following a series of accidents, many involving minors.

Under a draft law, minors would be banned from using electric scooters on the road network, with their use restricted to pedestrian zones and public squares.
