Public transport services in Athens will be significantly disrupted on Friday, as unions stage strikes and work stoppages to mark May Day.
Buses and trolley buses will operate on a limited schedule, running only between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Staff unions have announced work stoppages in the early morning and again from 9 p.m. until midnight, when services typically end.
Disruptions will also affect the metro network, where staff will halt work from the start of their shift until 9 a.m., and again from 11 p.m. until the end of their shift.
Meanwhile, workers on the Athens-Piraeus railway (Line 1) – commonly known as the green line – have announced a 24-hour strike, suspending services for the entire day.
Buses operating on suburban routes in the greater Athens area are expected to run without interruption.
The participating unions called for upgraded urban transport systems that better serve employees and the commuting public. They are also demanding stronger measures to address rising costs and profiteering.
