Traffic strain grows amid Ilissos construction delays

Work on the Ilissos River project in Athens has resumed after delays that disrupted traffic between Kallithea and Moschato, residents say.

A bridge on Poseidonos Avenue was demolished months ago for reconstruction, forcing local traffic onto a small crossing and causing congestion, noise and frustration, according to resident Vasilis Theodosopoulos.

The project, contracted in December 2024 to a consortium of Aktor and Intrakat, involves deepening about 370 meters of the riverbed and rebuilding the bridge, with a budget of €9.9 million. Work began in May 2025 after administrative delays. Payments stopped in November, prompting a work suspension in February over unpaid dues of about €1.2 million. Funding resumed in March, and the project has reached roughly 48% completion.

Next week, a high-pressure gas pipeline under the bridge will be shut down to allow construction of supports. Completion is expected by July, following a brief extension. Residents have raised concerns about water quality issues.
