One in three businesses fails tax inspections in first quarter

One in three companies checked in the first quarter of the year was found to be tax evading in some way, Greece’s independent tax authority, AADE, said Sunday.

An AADE statement said a total 8.000 spot inspections were carried out nationwide in January-March, based on factors including indications of potential tax evasion, complaints from members of the public and digital cross-checks.

AADE said 2,500 businesses were found to have evaded paying tax, largely by failure to issue receipts or register revenues received through cashcard payments. A total 50,000 violations of tax legislation were recorded, amounting to an estimated loss of more than €5.6 million in taxes, while the non-compliance rate was 33%.
