ATHEX: Index offsets early losses by closing

[Intime]

Athinon Avenue ended Thursday with hardly any changes to its main indexes. The day started off with a decline, as the expected 25-basis point cut by the Fed on Wednesday was already priced in, while the caution the US central bank showed in its statement led markets to believe a more restrained year is looming, according to a PIMCO commentary. However, toward the end of the session, certain blue chips recovered and offset all of the benchmark’s early losses.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,456.28 points, adding 0.04% to Wednesday’s 1,455.67 points. The large-cap FTSE-25 index expanded 0.09%, ending at 3,546.39 points.

The banks index advanced 0.62%, as Eurobank grew 1.13%, National fetched 0.88% and Piraeus earned 0.43%, though Alpha parted with 0.44%. Among the other blue chips, Titan Cement collected 2.30%, just as EYDAP parted with 1.53%.

In total 33 stocks made gains, 60 sustained losses and 23 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 92.8 million euros, up from Wednesday’s €154.2 million.

In Nicosia, the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange increased 0.07% to close at 213.44 points.
