The government\u2019s intervention to contain electricity prices in December will ultimately be limited in scope, since the major suppliers, under the threat of extraordinary taxation on profits from production activity, are proceeding to absorb most of the increases in the wholesale market.<\/p>\n
After Protergia, which fully absorbed the increase in the wholesale price, maintaining the price of a kilowatt-hour in its green tariff at 15.9 cents for a fifth consecutive month, PPC is offering a generous discount of 68%, keeping its basic tariff at 15.5 cents\/KWh, transferring to customers only a small part of the 53% increase in the wholesale market\u2019s energy costs. The price in PPC\u2019s green tariff in October was 14.9 cents\/KWh.<\/p>\n
Despite any fluctuations in the wholesale market during the year, the average price for PPC customers on the green tariff was set for 2024 at 13.425 cents\/KWh, reduced by approximately 30.6% compared to 2023. PPC states that throughout 2024, it smoothed out the sharp fluctuations in the wholesale energy market with discounts to its customers that totaled more than 550 million euros.<\/p>\n
A similar price containment policy is expected from the other two vertically integrated providers, Elpedison and Heron, with the smaller ones in the sector following to a lesser or greater extent due to competition.<\/p>\n
The final picture of the range of the KWh price in December will be formed on December 1 with the official announcements of all suppliers. In any case, for most consumers, since only PPC and Protergia have a combined market share close to 73% in low voltage (61.9% and 11%, respectively, in October), prices are between 15.5 and 15.9 cents.<\/p>\n
The reference point for the level of subsidies, as usual, will be the PPC tariff in December. The aim, as stated by Energy and Environment Minister Thodoros Skylakakis, is for the final prices for households and businesses not to exceed 15 cents\/KWh, with sources suggesting a one-cent subsidy that will bring the final price on the PPC green tariff to 14.5 cents\/KWh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
