Athens now has its own Chinese School of Classical Studies, following its inauguration on Thursday in a ceremony attended by Chinese and Greek officials, including Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People\u2019s Congress (NPC), who is visiting Greece.<\/p>\n
The new institution follows the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the Academy of Athens and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.<\/p>\n
The Chinese School of Classical Studies in Athens is the first classical studies research institute established in Greece by an Asian country, said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, speaking at an event held at the School\u2019s premises.<\/p>\n
The aim of its establishment is to promote academic research and exchanges on classical civilizations between China and Greece as well as globally.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope that the Chinese School of Classical Studies will be a bridge that will bring together Greek and Chinese archaeologists, academics, researchers and students, facilitating the exchange of knowledge, expertise and experience for mutual benefit,\u201d said Mendoni, herself an archaeologist.<\/p>\n
The establishment of the school was announced at the 1st World Conference on Classical Studies, which took place in Beijing on November 6-8.<\/p>\n
The creation of the Chinese School of Classical Studies in Athens is a good example of the implementation of the Global Culture Initiative, said Gao Xiang, president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, in a speech.<\/p>\n
The school will contribute to promoting exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese culture and other cultures, he added.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month professor emeritus of Classical Archaeology and member of the Academy of Athens Michalis Tiverios, told Kathimerini the creation of the Chinese School is \u201cpositive\u201d for Greece, noting that the Ancient Greek culture will this way be relaid to one of the most populous countries in the world and that Greece will also have the opportunity to get to know another important civilization.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt would be desirable,\u201d added Tiverios, \u201cto staff the Chinese School of Classical Studies with scientists who are well-versed in classical antiquity.\u201d<\/p>\n
