The EU\u2019s new enlargement commissioner has said she expects North Macedonia to proceed to amend its constitution so that its accession process to the bloc can proceed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI expect North Macedonia to change its constitution, nothing more, nothing less. I think it is possible to achieve something like this,\u201d said Slovenian\u00a0Marta Kos, speaking after MEPs ratified the new European Commission.<\/p>\n

Her remarks related to Bulgaria\u2019s veto on the start of North Macedonia\u2019s talks to join the European Union because of disputes over history and language.<\/p>\n

The previous center-left government in North Macedonia agreed to add a reference to a Bulgarian ethnic minority in the constitution to break the impasse, but lacked the parliamentary majority to enact the change.<\/p>\n

Kos said that she intends to visit all the countries that are candidates for EU membership, while in the case of North Macedonia she will urge that Skopje and Sofia resolve their differences themselves. [AMNA, Kathimerini]<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
