Last year, the Municipal Police issued over 40,000 fines for motorcycle violations, with the majority related to parking on sidewalks. Architects and urban planners suggest shifting city priorities, advocating for fewer car parking spaces and more for motorcycles, which take up less space and offer greater flexibility. Currently, Athens has approximately 4,000 motorcycle parking spots, but many are occupied by cars or are inadequate. Plans are in place to add more spots, including 1,107 new spaces across the city. Experts argue that improving infrastructure for motorcycles could ease congestion and improve pedestrian safety. Proper parking spaces, they say, could prevent illegal parking and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
