The court of appeal postponed his trial, initially scheduled for Thursday, February 6, and he will remain free until then.

The singer appeared before the prosecutor earlier, accompanied by his lawyer, Charalambos Lykoudis, wearing handcuffs, a hat, a hood, and a mask. Reports indicate that Mastoras expressed regret and apologized for his actions.

According to the same sources, Mastoras claimed he didn’t stop at the traffic police checkpoint because he didn’t realise they were signalling him. He also denies attempting to flee, stating that if that had been his intention, he would not have gone to a second checkpoint.

In a statement, his lawyer, Charalambos Lykoudis, said: “My client has been released until the hearing of his case next Thursday. He is deeply saddened and remorseful. The charge of dangerous driving that could have caused harm to someone is unfounded, and he does not accept it. He didn’t notice the police signal, which is clear from the fact that he immediately stopped at the next signal. His message is that no one should drive after drinking, even a little.”

Mastoras was arrested early in the morning after a breathalyzer test. The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. at a traffic checkpoint at Stadiou and Aiolou streets. Mastoras was the third driver to undergo the test, and while police were inspecting the first vehicle, he allegedly tried to flee the scene.

According to reports from the Greek Police (ELAS), the singer accelerated toward the officer, who signalled him to stop and fled the checkpoint.

Another traffic police unit in Omonia Square was immediately informed, and the officers at the second checkpoint stopped the singer and administered a breathalyzer test. Mastoras’ blood alcohol level was found to be above the legal limit, leading to his arrest. His alcohol level was reportedly over 0.8 milligrams per litre of exhaled air, while the legal limit is 0.25 milligrams.

What Applies to the KOK with the Breathalyzer Test?

According to Article 42 of the Highway Code, the permissible alcohol limit is 0.5 grams per litre of blood for blood sampling or 0.25 milligrams per litre of exhaled air for breathalyzer measurement.

If the alcohol concentration in the driver’s system exceeds these limits, the following penalties apply:

0.50 to 0.80 grams per litre of blood or 0.25 to 0.40 milligrams per litre of exhaled air:
Administrative fine of €200, vehicle immobilization, and five penalty points.

Above 0.80 to 1.10 grams per litre of blood or 0.40 to 0.60 milligrams per litre of exhaled air:
Administrative fine of €700, vehicle immobilization, withdrawal of the driver’s license for 90 days, and nine penalty points.

Above 1.10 grams per litre of blood or 0.60 milligrams per litre of exhaled air:
Administrative fine of €1,200, vehicle immobilization, imprisonment for 2 months, and withdrawal of the driver’s license for 180 days.

These penalties align with Greek law and aim to deter drunk driving and ensure public road safety.

Singer Christos Mastoras Released Ahead of Thursday’s Trial

Tags:
Alcohol Limit, Alcohol Limits, Athens, Breathalyzer, Christos Mastoras, Criminal Charges, dangerous driving, Drunk Driving, Greek Highway Code, Greek law, Legal Penalties, License Withdrawal, Singer Arrested, traffic police, vehicle immobilization

Source link

The Athens District Court Prosecutor’s Office has launched criminal proceedings against singer Christos Mastoras, who was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in central Athens.
