It was a bronze figure of a woman, remarkably well preserved despite spending centuries underwater.

The statue quickly attracted the attention of archaeologists and became a major archaeological discovery for Kalymnos.

Read more: Neanderthals on Naxos: The Ancient Site Rewriting Cycladic History

Standing taller than an average person and weighing approximately 300 kilograms, the Lady of Kalymnos depicts a mature woman dressed in traditional Greek clothing.

She wears a chiton, the tunic commonly worn in ancient Greece, beneath a distinctive mantle with a fringed border. The sculptor captured the intricate folds of the fabric and the texture of her hair with remarkable precision.

Her posture conveys authority and dignity. One hand rests on her hip, while the other holds a veil against her chest.

Her face is particularly striking, with features that reflect age and individuality rather than the idealised beauty commonly associated with ancient Greek representations of gods and mythological figures. Her eyes are missing, leaving empty sockets that add to the statue’s mysterious appearance.

Unlike many ancient sculptures depicting deities or mythical characters, the Lady of Kalymnos is believed to represent a real woman.

Her identity, however, remains unknown. Her appearance has led to suggestions that she may have been a prominent woman, possibly a wealthy matron or priestess, although her precise social status has not been established.

A masterpiece from the Hellenistic period

Archaeologists attribute the sculpture to the Hellenistic period, although its exact date remains debated. Proposed dates range from the fourth to the second century BC.

The Hellenistic era followed the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC and saw Greek art increasingly embrace individual expression, realism and more detailed representations of human character.

The Lady of Kalymnos reflects these artistic developments through her mature features, elaborate clothing and commanding presence.

Her origins and the circumstances surrounding her journey into the Aegean remain uncertain.

One theory suggests she was being transported aboard a merchant vessel when the ship sank near Kalymnos. She may have been destined for a wealthy buyer in another part of the Mediterranean, although no definitive evidence has established the vessel’s route or destination.

From a fisherman’s nets to Kalymnos Archaeological Museum

Following her recovery in 1994, the statue was transferred to Athens for examination and conservation.

For several years, she was displayed at the National Archaeological Museum, where she became one of the highlights of its collection of ancient bronzes.

However, the people of Kalymnos wanted their extraordinary discovery returned to the island.

In 2009, a new archaeological museum opened in Pothia, the island’s capital, providing a permanent home for the statue.

Today, the Lady of Kalymnos occupies a central position in the museum, which showcases the island’s history from prehistoric times through the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods.

Its collection includes ancient pottery, sculptures, coins, jewellery and historical manuscripts.

The waters around Kalymnos have also produced other significant archaeological finds. Bronze remains recovered by fishermen in 2006 and 2009 further demonstrated the archaeological wealth hidden beneath the surrounding sea.

A treasure connecting Kalymnos with ancient Greece

More than two millennia after she was created, the Lady of Kalymnos remains an extraordinary example of ancient Greek bronze sculpture.

Her survival underwater, the quality of her craftsmanship and the mystery surrounding her identity make her particularly significant.

For Kalymnos, an island internationally associated with its traditional sponge-diving heritage, the discovery also revealed another dimension of its relationship with the Aegean Sea.

What began as an ordinary fishing trip in 1994 ultimately brought an exceptional piece of Hellenistic art back into the light, giving the island a lasting connection to the artistic achievements of ancient Greece.

Today, visitors can see the Lady of Kalymnos at the Archaeological Museum in Pothia, where she remains one of the island’s most treasured cultural landmarks.

Related coverage

 Tags:
ancient Greece, ancient Greek sculpture, archaeological discoveries, Dodecanese, Greece, Greek archaeology, Greek culture, Greek history, greek islands, Hellenistic period, Kalymnos, Lady of Kalymnos

Bill Giannopoulos

Junior Editor

Bill Giannopoulos is a Junior Editor at Greek City Times, covering Greek and international news, sport, and history.

Source link

A remarkable bronze statue of a woman recovered from the seabed off the Greek island of Kalymnos has become one of the Dodecanese’s most important archaeological treasures.
