Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has told UN envoy Mar\u00eda \u00c1ngela Holgu\u00edn of his \u201cstrong dissatisfaction\u201d at her meeting with Turkey\u2019s ambassador to the occupied north, Cyprus Mail<\/a> reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n Holgu\u00edn, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus, met Ali Murat Ba\u015f\u00e7eri earlier on Tuesday. She then saw Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace, at her own request, according to the Cyprus News Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n The meeting at the palace lasted only 30 minutes.<\/p>\n Read more: Christodoulides Accuses Erdo\u011fan of \u2018Maximum Hypocrisy\u2019 Over Cyprus at UN<\/p>\n As she left, Holgu\u00edn said she had specific questions to put to the President and preferred to raise them in person rather than by telephone.<\/p>\n Speaking to reporters after the meeting, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the meeting with Ba\u015f\u00e7eri conflicts with UN Security Council Resolution 550. He called it \u201cunacceptable\u201d and \u201can unfortunate moment\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cUnited Nations officials, United Nations representatives, should operate based on the Security Council resolutions,\u201d he said, as quoted by Cyprus Mail.<\/p>\n Resolution 550, adopted in 1984, condemned the exchange of so-called ambassadors between Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership in the occupied north, which only Ankara recognises.<\/p>\n Letymbiotis said the explanation given was that Turkey\u2019s Deputy Foreign Minister Mehmet Kemal Bozay had arranged the meeting so that a message could be passed on to Holgu\u00edn. \u201cThe explanation given is that it was requested by the Turkish side in order to pass on a message,\u201d he said, according to Politis<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIn any case, it was an action we consider unacceptable and an unfortunate moment,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Despite the row, Letymbiotis said Holgu\u00edn\u2019s contacts would continue and that the two sides would move towards a joint meeting on 9 November.<\/p>\n \u201cThe real will and the real intention are evaluated through reaching agreements,\u201d he said. Politis reported that he also saw room for progress ahead of that meeting.<\/p>\n Holgu\u00edn has been trying to revive the stalled UN process on Cyprus, which has been divided since Turkey\u2019s 1974 invasion.
