Greece is quietly establishing itself as an emerging player in the global semiconductor industry, with dozens of companies working in chip design, microelectronics and advanced technology.<\/h2>\n

An industry study has identified 35 Greek companies operating in the semiconductor and microchip sector, employing approximately 1,200 specialists.<\/p>\n

The figures highlight a developing technology ecosystem that is increasingly attracting international attention, investment and acquisitions.<\/p>\n

While Greece is not yet a major semiconductor manufacturing centre, it has developed particular strengths in chip design, engineering, research and intellectual property.<\/p>\n

International technology giants turn to Greek talent<\/h2>\n

Over the past decade, several Greek technology companies have attracted major international buyers, demonstrating the expertise being developed within the country\u2019s technology sector.<\/p>\n

Among the notable examples is Think Silicon, a Greek company specialising in graphics processing technology, which was acquired by US-based Applied Materials in 2020.<\/p>\n

Another significant transaction involved Helic, a Greek electronic design automation company acquired by ANSYS in 2019.<\/p>\n

Dialog Semiconductor, which had substantial engineering operations in Greece, was acquired by Japanese technology group Renesas Electronics in 2021 in a deal valued at approximately \u20ac4.8 billion.<\/p>\n

These transactions have helped raise the international profile of Greek engineering and semiconductor expertise.<\/p>\n

Investment in research and development<\/h2>\n

Greece is also working to strengthen its position through research infrastructure, European partnerships and initiatives supporting semiconductor innovation.<\/p>\n

The Hellenic Chips Competence Centre, established with European and national support, aims to help businesses access expertise, training, research facilities and advanced chip-design capabilities.<\/p>\n

The initiative reflects Europe\u2019s broader effort to strengthen its semiconductor capabilities and reduce reliance on external suppliers.<\/p>\n

Greece\u2019s opportunity in the global chip industry<\/h2>\n

Semiconductors are essential to modern technology, powering everything from smartphones and computers to electric vehicles, artificial intelligence systems, telecommunications and defence equipment.<\/p>\n

Although Greece does not currently compete with major manufacturing centres such as Taiwan and South Korea, its growing expertise in semiconductor design and engineering gives it an opportunity to play a greater role in the international technology supply chain.<\/p>\n

With an established pool of engineering talent, research institutions and companies attracting multinational interest, Greece\u2019s semiconductor sector is becoming an increasingly important part of its evolving economy.<\/p>\n

The country\u2019s challenge now is to turn this specialist expertise into sustained investment, new businesses and highly skilled employment.<\/p>\n
