But behind them lies an inland of castle towns, archaeological treasures, mountains and a dense web of religious monuments.

Some of those monuments recall the glory of the middle Byzantine era, while others still echo the 1821 Revolution. Many also remain living monastic communities, so each stop on a Boeotia pilgrimage opens a window onto local life.

Four stops on a Boeotia pilgrimage

The Region of Central Greece now places religious and pilgrimage tourism at the front of its promotion. It also wants to link the leading monasteries and churches with the area’s wider culture and food.

Read more: Greek Officials Promote Religious Tourism During New York Visit

Its Boeotia pilgrimage takes in four distinct stops. They are Hosios Loukas, the Makariotissa Monastery, the Church of Saint Luke the Evangelist and Megali Panagia in Thebes.

Because the sites sit close together, a Boeotia pilgrimage can fit into one day. Visitors can admire gold mosaics in the morning, then reach a monastery on the fir-covered slopes of Mount Helicon by midday.

After an afternoon among the Christian traces of Thebes, the day can end with Boeotian wine and local flavours.

Byzantine gold at Hosios Loukas

On the western foothills of Helicon, the Monastery of Hosios Loukas grew around the revered figure of Hosios Loukas of Steiri. It is still perhaps the finest example of middle Byzantine architecture in Greece.

Since 1990, it has featured on the UNESCO World Heritage List, together with the monasteries of Daphni and Nea Moni on Chios.

Inside the gate stand the 10th-century Church of the Panagia, the 11th-century katholikon, or main church, a crypt, cells and galleries. Its katholikon mosaics, among the finest surviving Byzantine art anywhere, make a fitting start to a Boeotia pilgrimage.

When daylight enters through the dome windows, the gold tesserae seem to come alive. The relic of the saint returned from Venice in 1986, while the candlelit crypt below holds his original tomb.

Cheese and revolution at Makariotissa

Perched near Domvraina, the Makariotissa Monastery offers a different picture of monastic life. It underwent major renovations in 1609, then again in 1802.

In 1821, it became a key local stronghold of the Revolution, serving as a base and refuge for the troops of Georgios Karaiskakis.

A new brotherhood revived Makariotissa in 1992, and since then worship and production have gone hand in hand. The monks raise livestock and keep alive traditional cheesemaking.

Every day, their modern dairy inside the monastery produces fresh milk, strained yoghurt and rizogalo, a creamy rice pudding. It also keeps the community self-sufficient.

Saint Luke’s tomb in Thebes

On a Boeotia pilgrimage, Thebes brings a name known around the world. Its story evokes the myth of Oedipus, the sacrifice of Antigone and the military genius of Epaminondas.

Beneath that ancient layer, however, lies an equally deep Christian story. In the city’s south-east stands the Pilgrimage Church of Saint Luke the Evangelist, a landmark on any Boeotia pilgrimage.

Church tradition holds that the Evangelist, a physician and icon painter, chose Thebes as his final stop, where he lived, taught and died.

Inside, a Roman marble sarcophagus from the 2nd century AD is linked to his first burial. Then, in 357 AD, his relics went to Constantinople and, after centuries of travel through Europe, ended up in Italy.

Finally, on 17 September 2000, part of the relics returned to Thebes and rest again in the ancient marble tomb.

A church built like a stone book

On the western side of the historic centre, the Church of Agios Dimitrios is better known as Megali Panagia. The present church opened in spring 1867, because the earthquakes of 1853 had destroyed the older building.

Its architect, Ioannis Filippotis of Tinos, set ancient fragments, early Christian pieces and Byzantine carvings from the surrounding area into its outer walls. As a result, the building reads like a book of stone.

At its heart hangs the icon of Megali Panagia, which tradition attributes to Saint Luke himself. That link also ties it to the previous stop, creating a small themed route within the city.

Planning a Boeotia pilgrimage all year

Beyond the four stops, a Boeotia pilgrimage can also reach Orchomenos, Chaeronea, Livadeia with its running waters, Plataea, Thespies and Helicon. Villages, trails through fir and oak forests and a proud food tradition complete the picture.

Pilgrimage tourism also stays relevant 365 days a year, since monasteries draw visitors in every season. At the same time, the big religious feasts offer further reasons to escape.

The region hopes a Boeotia pilgrimage, backed by culture, food and quality stays, will turn day trips into longer visits. Fani Papathoma, Deputy Regional Governor for Tourism and Culture of Central Greece, said:

“From Hosios Loukas and Makariotissa to the Holy Church of Saint Luke the Evangelist and Megali Panagia, we are showcasing places that continue to speak of Boeotia, its history and its tradition.
