He died the following day, leaving behind a grieving father who refused to accept that the tragedy was simply an accident.

More than five decades later, the circumstances surrounding his death remain the subject of conspiracy theories, including allegations involving the CIA. However, no publicly established evidence has conclusively demonstrated that a foreign intelligence agency was responsible.

A privileged childhood under the Onassis name

Alexander Onassis was born in New York on April 30, 1948, the first child of Aristotle Onassis and his first wife, Athina Livanos, widely known as Tina. His younger sister, Christina, was born in 1950.

He grew up surrounded by extraordinary wealth, travelling between international residences and becoming part of one of the world’s most prominent shipping dynasties.

Despite his privileged upbringing, Alexander’s relationship with his father was reportedly complicated. Aristotle’s demanding business commitments often kept him away from family life, while his parents’ separation and his father’s subsequent marriage to Jacqueline Kennedy brought further changes to the family.

Alexander developed a close attachment to his mother and struggled with aspects of his parents’ separation.

From a love of speed to the family business

Alexander had a passion for fast cars and aviation, interests that reflected his attraction to speed and machinery.

His personal life also attracted attention in European social circles, particularly his relationship with Fiona Campbell-Walter, a former model from New Zealand who was considerably older than him. His father reportedly disapproved of the relationship.

Despite their differences, Aristotle Onassis was preparing his son to inherit responsibility for the family empire.

By the early 1970s, Alexander had taken on a senior management role at Olympic Airways, the airline his father had acquired in 1957. He was increasingly involved in the business interests that would eventually place him at the centre of the Onassis succession.

His death would abruptly end those plans.

The fatal crash at Ellinikon Airport

On Monday, January 22, 1973, Alexander was piloting a Piaggio P.136 amphibious aircraft when it crashed at Ellinikon Airport shortly after take-off.

He suffered severe head injuries. Two other people aboard the aircraft were also injured, although their injuries were reportedly less serious.

Alexander was taken to KAT Hospital in Athens, where he died on January 23, aged 24. Some accounts have described him as 25, but he had not yet reached his 25th birthday.

The tragedy devastated Aristotle Onassis, who was in New York when he learned of his son’s death.

According to accounts of the aftermath, the shipping magnate immediately suspected foul play and refused to accept that the crash had been a straightforward accident.

Investigations attributed the crash to the incorrect positioning of the aircraft’s ailerons, which affected its response to the pilot’s controls. Three findings reportedly reached the same general conclusion.

Aristotle, however, remained unconvinced and was said to have offered a reward of $1 million for information identifying those responsible, believing his son had been deliberately killed.

Did the CIA have a role?

The circumstances of Alexander’s death generated numerous theories about possible sabotage and political or commercial motives.

Among the names and organisations subsequently linked to speculation were the CIA, the Greek military dictatorship, rival shipping interests associated with Stavros Niarchos and employees of Olympic Airways.

The CIA theory has persisted in accounts of the tragedy, partly because of the political climate of the early 1970s and the international business interests surrounding the Onassis family.

However, the allegation that the CIA killed Alexander Onassis remains unproven. The existence of suspicions and conspiracy theories does not establish that an intelligence agency orchestrated the crash.

Seven Olympic Airways engineers were reportedly prosecuted in connection with the case. On November 7, 1977, they were acquitted by a three-member misdemeanour court in Athens.

Their acquittal did not establish that a conspiracy had taken place. Nor does it, by itself, resolve every question that has subsequently been raised about the crash.

The official findings attributing the accident to the aircraft’s control configuration remain central to the documented account of the tragedy.

A death that changed the Onassis dynasty

Alexander’s death was a profound personal blow to Aristotle Onassis and a turning point for the family’s future.

As his only son, Alexander had been expected to play a central role in the continuation of the family’s business interests. His death left his father without the successor he had been preparing to take over the empire.

Alexander was buried on Skorpios, the private Ionian island closely associated with the Onassis family.

Aristotle Onassis died in 1975, two years after his son.

In Alexander’s memory, his father established the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, which supports educational, cultural and charitable initiatives. The foundation continues to preserve his name through scholarships and other programmes.

An enduring mystery

Alexander Onassis’s death remains one of the most discussed tragedies in the history of modern Greek business and high society.

The loss of a young heir, the extraordinary wealth surrounding his family and his father’s determination to challenge the official explanation created fertile ground for decades of speculation.

Yet the central question, whether the crash was deliberately engineered, has never been conclusively answered by publicly established evidence.

The CIA allegations remain part of the story’s mythology, rather than a proven explanation for the death of Aristotle Onassis’s only son.

 Tags:
Alexander Onassis, Alexander S Onassis Foundation, Aristotle Onassis, CIA conspiracy theories, Ellinikon Airport, Greece, Greek history, Greek shipping, Olympic Airways, Onassis family, Stavros Niarchos

Bill Giannopoulos

Junior Editor

Bill Giannopoulos is a Junior Editor at Greek City Times, covering Greek and international news, sport, and history.

Source link

The death of Alexander Onassis, the only son of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, at the age of 24, shocked Greece and sparked decades of speculation about whether his fatal plane crash was an accident or the result of sabotage.
