The Bar in Front of the Bar delivered one of the most significant climbs in this year\u2019s rankings, rising from No. 47 in 2025 to No. 19 in the world.<\/h2>\n<\/source><\/picture><\/figure>\n
The Athens venue also won the Nikka Highest Climber Award, recognising its rise of 28 places.<\/p>\n
The bar began as a street-side pop-up in 2021, serving drinks through a hatch after its original indoor venue temporarily closed. The concept proved popular and developed into a permanent destination, retaining its informal atmosphere and close connection with the street.<\/p>\n
Its creative approach to cocktails and relaxed style have helped it build an international following while maintaining a distinctly urban Athens identity. The venue also ranked second in the 2026 Europe\u2019s 50 Best Bars list, announced earlier this year.<\/p>\n
Barro Negro breaks into the global top 50<\/h3>\n<\/source><\/picture><\/figure>\n
Barro Negro completed the Greek trio, climbing from No. 62 in 2025 to No. 40 in the world, securing a place among the top 50 bars for the first time.<\/p>\n
Located on Paparigopoulou Street in central Athens, the venue has built its reputation around agave spirits and Mexican drinking culture.<\/p>\n
Its cocktail offering reflects the founders\u2019 research trips to Mexico, with tequila and mezcal playing a central role in the bar\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n
The rise follows its strong performance in the European rankings, where Barro Negro also earned recognition earlier in 2026. Its latest result further demonstrates the diversity of Athens\u2019 cocktail scene, which encompasses everything from fermentation-focused experimentation to specialist agave bars.<\/p>\n
Hong Kong bar retains the world\u2019s No. 1 spot<\/h3>\n
While Athens celebrated three entries in the top 50, Hong Kong\u2019s Bar Leone retained first place for the second consecutive year.<\/p>\n

Athens strengthens its international appeal<\/h3>\n
Athens\u2019 success comes amid the city\u2019s growing profile as a destination for food, drink and cultural experiences.<\/p>\n
The Greek capital has increasingly attracted visitors seeking more than a stopover before travelling to the islands. Its independent bars and restaurants have become an important part of that appeal, combining Greek hospitality with international influences and locally inspired concepts.<\/p>\n
The 50 Best Bars rankings are compiled through votes from more than 800 drinks industry experts across 29 geographic regions. Voters select bars based on their experiences over the preceding 18 months, with rules designed to limit the influence of their home countries on the results.<\/p>\n
With Line in fifth place, The Bar in Front of the Bar at No. 19 and Barro Negro at No. 40, Athens has secured three positions among the world\u2019s leading cocktail destinations.<\/p>\n
The Bar in Front of the Bar is also associated with the team behind Rocks n Grapes, whose work with Greek spirits, including tsipouro, reflects a broader commitment to showcasing Greece\u2019s distinctive drinking culture. Their international recognition further highlights the growing influence of Greek talent on the global bar scene.<\/p>\n
The results provide further evidence that Greece\u2019s hospitality industry is building an international reputation not only through its traditional cuisine and island resorts, but also through a modern bar culture that continues to attract global recognition.<\/p>\n
