Greece gave European champions England a major scare in Crete, striking the woodwork and exposing defensive weaknesses before the Lionesses recovered to claim a 3-1 victory in their FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup qualifying play-off first leg.<\/p>\n

England arrived as overwhelming favourites, but Greece proved far more difficult to break down than expected, frustrating Sarina Wiegman\u2019s side with a disciplined defensive display before threatening to produce a major upset.<\/p>\n

Georgia Stanway, Maya Le Tissier and Alessia Russo scored for England, while Kallisti Brouksair found the net for Greece late in the match to give the hosts a deserved reward for their efforts.<\/p>\n

Despite England controlling 74 per cent of possession, Greece repeatedly demonstrated that their opponents were vulnerable when put under pressure.<\/p>\n

However, the performance raised questions about England\u2019s ability to compete against the world\u2019s strongest teams.<\/p>\n

Wiegman\u2019s side struggled to find solutions against Greece\u2019s deep defensive block and were repeatedly exposed when the hosts attacked with pace.<\/p>\n
