The questions under it were practical: can that salary cover a month, and how do you find a flat if you are already working and cannot sit in Athens house-hunting? One suggestion in the thread was a hotel while you look. The replies treated that as part of the problem, not a solution.

<picture></picture>
A contemporary Greek apartment complex featuring multiple floors and spacious balconies, set amidst lush trees and well-maintained landscaping.

The post sits next to a longer one that has been circulating on the same forum: why young people in Greece work and still cannot live. A contributor who left in 2014 argued that the country has built a convenient story about life in Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, and that the harder comparison is at home. They cited Eurostat figures for 2024: Greece had the highest housing-cost overburden rate in the EU, at 28.9 per cent; 19 per cent could not keep the home adequately warm; 43 per cent were behind on mortgage, rent or utility bills.

A separate item on the same feed gives the argument a name and a number. The rector of the University of Patras said about 400 students who passed the exams did not enrol this year. Families, he said, are worrying about the rent.

None of this is a poll. r/greece is a comment thread, and the salaries in it are offers, not a national average. What the forum is describing is the gap between a job that sounds acceptable and a month that does not close: a gaming salary in Athens, a student place in Patras, and the same question under both.

Bill Giannopoulos

Junior Editor

Bill Giannopoulos is a Junior Editor at Greek City Times, covering Greek and international news, sport, and history.

Source link

A job offer of €1,100 to €1,200 in Athens is the latest post on r/greece to turn into an argument about whether work in the capital is enough to live on.
