However, in a final twist to the devastating saga, Athanasopoulos died in August 2026 just before Victoria Police could formally lay fraud charges against him.

A Trusted Pillar in ‘Little Athens’

Operating his boutique Collins Street workshop since the early 1990s, Athanasopoulos was widely known and deeply trusted among local Greek-Australians.

In 2018, his life took a dramatic turn when doctors diagnosed him with a rare, aggressive form of cancer. Initially refusing to accept the grim reality—famously writing, “Being a proud Greek, I was not about to accept the words: ‘you need to lose your arm’… My whole life was based on these arms and hands”—he eventually underwent an amputation to save his life.

When he returned to his workbench, his fiercely loyal clientele rallied behind him. Customers patiently waited hours for simple tasks as he painstakingly relearned his intricate craft one-handed. Behind the scenes of this inspiring recovery, however, lay a cold, calculated betrayal.

The Mechanics of the Multi-Million Dollar Con

As police investigations later revealed, Athanasopoulos exploited this immense communal goodwill to execute three primary fraudulent schemes:

Melting Down Family Heirlooms: In what victims describe as his cruellest move, Athanasopoulos accepted precious generational jewellery left at his workshop for routine cleaning, resizing, or appraisals. Instead of servicing them, he stole the items, melted them down into liquid gold, and sold them off as cheap scrap metal.

Fictitious Gold & Silver Trading: His most lucrative deception involved convincing affluent members of the diaspora to invest large sums of cash into a completely fabricated gold and silver trading scheme, promising quick, high-yield profits.

Phantom Inventory: He routinely pocketed tens of thousands of dollars in upfront deposits from clients looking to purchase custom-made jewellery pieces that he never intended to supply.

A Year of Lies and Empty Promises

By mid-2023, Athanasopoulos’s health had collapsed further, and he permanently shuttered his Collins Street business. He spent the final year of his life strictly “fobbing off” his increasingly desperate victims.

When frantic clients demanded the return of their life savings or asked where their priceless family heirlooms had gone, the jeweller spun a web of delays and excuses. Many victims only discovered the horrific truth—that their family history had been liquified and sold for scrap—after police stepped in.

No Day in Court

With Athanasopoulos’s sudden passing in August, the criminal case has effectively ended abruptly. While the investigation brought the staggering scale of the $2 million fraud to light, his victims have been denied legal closure or a day in court.

The Melbourne Greek community is now left reeling, grappling not only with immense financial devastation but with the heartbreaking realisation that their vulnerability was weaponised by one of their own.

Bill Giannopoulos

Junior Editor

Bill Giannopoulos is a Junior Editor at Greek City Times, covering Greek and international news, sport, and history.

Source link

A prominent, one-armed jeweller who spent decades building a stellar reputation on Melbourne’s prestigious Collins Street has been unmasked for orchestrating a shocking multi-million-dollar scam.
