A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck near Patras in western Greece on Friday evening, with the tremor felt in parts of the wider area.<\/h2>\n

The earthquake hit shortly before 6:30pm, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute.<\/p>\n

Its epicentre was located around two kilometres northwest of Halandritsa, an area inland from Patras, while the focal depth was measured at approximately 9.3 kilometres.<\/p>\n

There were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage following the earthquake.<\/p>\n

Earthquakes common in Greece<\/h3>\n

Greece is among Europe\u2019s most seismically active countries, with earthquakes recorded across the country every day.<\/p>\n

Most are relatively small and are either weakly felt or go unnoticed.<\/p>\n

While stronger earthquakes can cause significant damage, major casualties remain uncommon.<\/p>\n

One of Greece\u2019s most destructive recent earthquakes struck in September 1999, when a magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit the wider Athens region.<\/p>\n

The earthquake killed 143 people and caused extensive damage, particularly across areas north and west of the capital.<\/p>\n

Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity following Friday\u2019s earthquake near Patras.<\/p>\n
