The force of the blast also sent rocks and broken glass flying as far as three blocks away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firefighters and emergency crews rushed to the scene as smoke rose above the historic centre of Athens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities are searching for five people believed to have been inside or connected to the building, including an elderly couple who lived there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the property was reportedly being used as short term tourist accommodation, according to police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The area is one of Athens\u2019 busiest tourist districts, with hotels, short term rentals, cafes and souvenir shops lining its narrow streets.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/greekcitytimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/173622.webp \" type=\"image\/webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/greekcitytimes.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/173622.webp\" height=\"412\" width=\"736\" class=\"wp-image-602918 sp-no-webp\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\"\/> <\/source><\/picture><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three people were injured in the incident.
