Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis outlined key government initiatives during his weekly review, condemning a fatal car accident in Hania and emphasizing policies on housing, healthcare and energy.<\/p>\n
The fatal accident, caused by a drunk driver who was stopped by officers but not detained, occurred last weekend. Mitsotakis announced a change in leadership at the local police department in response.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe cannot ignore reckless drivers who drive drunk. The responsibility also lies with law enforcement, which must be consistent and strict, as well as with police leadership, which is ultimately accountable for how services operate. That\u2019s why I\u2019ve called for a change in the leadership of the Hania police department,\u201d Mitsotakis said.<\/p>\n
The prime minister also highlighted the launch of \u201cMy Home II,\u201d a program offering affordable loans to Greeks aged 25 to 50 for their first homes. With a budget of 2 billion euros, the program aims to assist 20,000 citizens. Mitsotakis noted, \u201cThe response has been overwhelming, with over 42,000 applications already submitted.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also discussed Greece\u2019s role in European energy policy, reaffirming the country\u2019s commitment to green energy and urging reforms in the EU\u2019s energy market to address rising electricity prices. Mitsotakis mentioned that he had written to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, proposing solutions to ensure Europe\u2019s energy security.<\/p>\n
In healthcare, Mitsotakis outlined ongoing efforts to improve emergency services in Athens hospitals and criticized the opposition\u2019s proposals, including those on insurance companies, which he labeled as \u201cunrealistic and incompatible with EU regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Additionally, Mitsotakis reviewed the government\u2019s progress on \u201ctap2ride,\u201d a contactless payment service for public transport, which launched Wednesday, marking a step toward smarter city infrastructure.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
