The Wiggles have swapped Hot Potato for spanakopita. A new South Australian programme uses their songs to help children learn Greek.<\/h4>\n

Lucia Field \u2014 the newest blue Wiggle and daughter of original blue Wiggle Anthony Field \u2014 fronts the project for the Hellenic Studies Foundation. She launched it on Friday morning at the Adelaide Convention Centre with Wags the Dog, Foundation representatives and Education Minister Lucy Hood. The title is Celebrate Greek Language and Culture with Lucia and The Wiggles<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The package includes a new album, a YouTube video and free online resources. The Wiggles created it for the Foundation, with state government support. Music, movement and play sit at the centre.<\/p>\n

\u201cChildren learn best when they are having fun, and that is something we know incredibly well at The Wiggles,\u201d Field says. \u201cMusic and movement can make language feel familiar and exciting from a very young age. We\u2019re so proud to be part of a project that helps children discover the joy of the Greek language while celebrating the culture and traditions that are so important to so many Australian families.\u201d<\/p>\n

Families, carers and teachers across Australia can use the materials whether or not a child sits in a formal Greek class. The songs introduce words, sounds and phrases in the same mix of music and imagination that built The Wiggles\u2019 reputation.<\/p>\n

Hood calls the partnership \u201ca fantastic, unique way for new generations to engage with the Greek language and culture.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMillions have already engaged with this innovative learning tool, which helps strengthen cultural ties for Australian children of Greek origin, and this expanded program will ensure that many, many more can benefit from this landmark collaboration,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Foundation chair Greg Crafter AO says the aim is to put Greek into everyday life. \u201cWe want children to see Greek not simply as a language they want to learn, but as something joyful, meaningful and connected to who they are. Partnering with The Wiggles allows us to reach children and families in an incredibly engaging way and help build that connection from the earliest years.\u201d<\/p>\n
