They chose to use one of those embryos in the hope of bringing new life into their family after their devastating loss.

But the couple faced a race against Greece’s legal age limit for IVF treatment.

Greek regulations generally prohibit women over the age of 54 from undergoing IVF, meaning Rapti-Tzelepi needed approval from the country’s national reproductive medicine authority as she approached the age limit.

That approval allowed the pregnancy to proceed.

On Wednesday, September 9, Rapti-Tzelepi gave birth to a healthy baby girl at a hospital in Athens. The newborn weighed 3.49 kilograms.

The couple named her Georgia, a tribute to their late son Giorgos, who had also been born through IVF.

“We decided to give life a second chance, to make a new start, bring new life into our home and keep our family’s story going,” Rapti-Tzelepi said.

“My wish for her is to grow up healthy and happy, full of joy like our first child, who filled our home with laughter.”

An embryo frozen for more than two decades

The birth is notable not only because of the family’s extraordinary story, but also because of the age of the embryo used in the pregnancy.

The embryo had remained cryopreserved for more than 22 years before being transferred. Embryos can remain frozen for extended periods when stored under appropriate conditions, although successful births involving embryos frozen for such a long time remain relatively uncommon.

The case follows another remarkable birth in the United States last year, when an Ohio couple welcomed a baby boy through embryo adoption using an embryo that had been frozen for more than 30 years. The case was recognised by Guinness World Records.

Greece’s IVF age limit under scrutiny

The birth has also reignited debate over Greece’s age restrictions for IVF.

Dr Kostas Pantos, Rapti-Tzelepi’s gynaecologist and head of the Hellenic Society of Reproductive Medicine, said the country’s rules may need to be reconsidered, particularly as Greece continues to face a declining birth rate.

Under current regulations, women can undergo IVF treatment only until they reach the age of 54.

“The law is very strict: 54 plus one day is not allowed. Maybe it’s time for it to change,” Pantos said.

“I think it’s a right (parents) should not be deprived of.”

For Rapti-Tzelepi and her husband, however, the birth of Georgia represents something deeply personal: a new chapter for a family still carrying the memory of a son they lost far too soon.

 Tags:
Athens, childbirth, fertility, frozen embryo, Georgia, Giorgos, Greece, Greek City Times, greek woman, IVF, reproductive medicine

Bill Giannopoulos

Junior Editor

Bill Giannopoulos is a Junior Editor at Greek City Times, covering Greek and international news, sport, and history.

Source link

A 54-year-old Greek woman has given birth to a baby girl using an embryo that had been frozen for more than 22 years, following the devastating death of her 21-year-old son in a road accident.
