Mediterranean red coral (Corallium rubrum<\/em>) is one of the most valuable materials in the jewellery industry. A raw haul valued at \u20ac800,000 can be transformed into finished jewellery worth several million euros. The species is strictly protected under European environmental law, making unauthorised harvesting a serious offence.<\/p>\n The yacht was found carrying diving equipment and specialised tools consistent with organised underwater extraction in the waters of the Northern Sporades.<\/p>\n Ecological Damage That Can Last Centuries<\/p>\n Marine biologist Christos Taklis has warned that the illegal removal of red coral causes long-term harm to Greek marine ecosystems. The coral typically grows at depths of 15 to 300 metres and forms vital biodiversity hotspots that provide shelter and breeding grounds for many marine species.<\/p>\n \u201cRed corals grow just a few millimetres a year,\u201d Taklis said. \u201cWhen a coral area is destroyed, it can take centuries to recover.\u201d<\/p>\n He noted that each habitat is unique, making natural restoration extremely difficult. Greece still lacks a complete map of its coral ecosystems, leaving many colonies poorly protected.<\/p>\n Strict Rules Were Ignored<\/p>\n Coral collection is only allowed under a tight regulatory framework that requires special permits, quotas, full catch recording and proper export documentation.
