The Greek Ministry of Culture is moving ahead with a full-scale programme to protect and showcase the archaeological site of Rhamnous in Grammatiko, Attica. The initiative includes measures to strengthen monument conservation, upgrade visitor infrastructure and improve the overall experience for those exploring one of the region\u2019s most significant ancient sites.<\/p>\n

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni underlined the site\u2019s importance: \u201cRhamnous is a major archaeological site of Attica, of exceptional historical and archaeological value. It vividly illustrates the enduring relationship between people and both the natural and cultural landscape. The Ministry of Culture is now implementing an integrated plan for its protection and promotion. This covers the enhancement of the fortress, the restoration and conservation of key funerary monuments, and the upgrading of visitor pathways and fire-protection systems.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe project aims to preserve, protect and highlight the fortress of Rhamnous in accordance with the principles of minimal necessary intervention and respect for the monument\u2019s authenticity. Comprehensive protection and enhancement of the fortress also require the continuation of excavation research and restoration work.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe conservation of the structural fabric of twelve funerary monuments \u2014 including the enclosures of prominent families and citizens of ancient Rhamnous \u2014 will make a substantial contribution to safeguarding the site\u2019s unique monumental heritage. Accessibility, safety and fire protection are critical factors for the long-term sustainability of any archaeological site. For this reason, in 2024 the Ministry of Culture included Rhamnous in the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, advancing works that improve access and ensure safe visitor circulation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Located at the northeastern tip of Attica and overlooking the Euboean Gulf, the site preserves a fortified settlement, the sanctuary of Nemesis, smaller sanctuaries and an impressive funerary road lined with monumental Classical-period enclosures. Two harbours once controlled maritime traffic through the gulf. The fortress itself, like that at Sounion, is believed to have been constructed during the Peloponnesian War to safeguard the vital grain shipments bound for Athens.<\/p>\n
