His family announced the news with deep sadness, saying the date and time of the funeral will be made public shortly.<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born Michalis Chalkiopoulos in Ioannina on 30 August 1943, Chalkias belonged to the fourth generation of the historic Chalkias musical family. At the age of seven he started singing and soon mastered several instruments, including the guitar, bouzouki, lute, tzoura and oud. During the golden years of the 1960s (1961\u20131967) he performed alongside some of the greatest names in Greek music \u2014 Sotiria Bellou, Stelios Kazantzidis, Grigoris Bithikotsis and Giorgos Zambetas \u2014 and shared the stage with rebetiko legends Markos Vamvakaris, Yiannis Papaioannou and Vasilis Tsitsanis. In the summers he continued to tour with his family\u2019s band, performing at traditional festivals and village celebrations across Greece.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between 1967 and 1971 he lived and worked in the United States and Canada. During this period he collaborated with actor Anthony Quinn on a television presentation of <em>Zorba<\/em> (with music by Mikis Theodorakis) for a Sacramento, California network. Upon returning to Greece in 1971, his career flourished through a landmark collaboration with composer Yannis Markopoulos.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u039b\u03ac\u03ba\u03b7\u03c2 \u03a7\u03b1\u03bb\u03ba\u03b9\u03ac\u03c2 - \u0397 \u03c6\u03ac\u03bc\u03c0\u03c1\u03b9\u03ba\u03b1\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LsBDi4jEVV4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1984 he set excerpts from Homer\u2019s <em>Iliad<\/em> to music and appeared at the Herodes Atticus Theatre performing Nikos Kazantzakis\u2019s <em>Odyssey<\/em> with music by Nikos Mamangakis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Politically, Chalkias was aligned with the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and stood as a parliamentary candidate for the party in the 2007 national elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With decades of recordings and live performances, Lakis Chalkias played a decisive role in preserving and promoting Greece\u2019s musical heritage.
