Lakis Chalkias, one of the most important figures in Greek traditional and folk music, passed away on Saturday, 2 August 2026, at the age of 82. His family announced the news with deep sadness, saying the date and time of the funeral will be made public shortly.<\/h3>\n
Born Michalis Chalkiopoulos in Ioannina on 30 August 1943, Chalkias belonged to the fourth generation of the historic Chalkias musical family. He was the son of the celebrated clarinetist Tasos Chalkias and carried forward a tradition that left a lasting mark on Greek folk music.<\/p>\n His musical journey began early. At the age of seven he started singing and soon mastered several instruments, including the guitar, bouzouki, lute, tzoura and oud. During the golden years of the 1960s (1961\u20131967) he performed alongside some of the greatest names in Greek music \u2014 Sotiria Bellou, Stelios Kazantzidis, Grigoris Bithikotsis and Giorgos Zambetas \u2014 and shared the stage with rebetiko legends Markos Vamvakaris, Yiannis Papaioannou and Vasilis Tsitsanis. In the summers he continued to tour with his family\u2019s band, performing at traditional festivals and village celebrations across Greece.<\/p>\n Between 1967 and 1971 he lived and worked in the United States and Canada. During this period he collaborated with actor Anthony Quinn on a television presentation of Zorba<\/em> (with music by Mikis Theodorakis) for a Sacramento, California network.
